Maths in got hands-on and practical in Year 3 as we tackled perimeter using an alternative approach! Instead of continuing to just use rulers, we put string to the test to measure different shapes—and it turned into an exciting teamwork challenge!

First, we measured straight-edged shapes with rulers, adding up the sides to find the perimeter. But when we moved on to tricky, irregular shapes, we needed a better way. That’s when we grabbed the string! We carefully traced the shapes, doing our best to hold the string still, then stretched the string out against a ruler to measure its length. 

Some of us found the ruler method quicker, while others loved how the string helped with curved edges. It was a fun way to compare different techniques and work together to solve the challenge!
