Children without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture, are like trees without roots. At Tudor Grange Primary Academy Meon Vale, we believe History is important in providing all children with an awareness of themselves and to understand our world as it is. We encourage children to question and to think, and as such historical understanding is developed through a series of enquiries.

From the beginning of Key Stage 2 onwards our History is taught chronologically. At the beginning of every new topic our children explore a timeline, putting their previous learning into context. In Key Stage 1, children will be introduced to several different time periods incidentally through their units of learning. Progression is shown by: an increasing understanding of chronology; understanding and use of key historical terms; ability to identify features and similarities/differences within and across periods; understanding how to carry out an historical investigation and present ideas effectively with increasing independence; growing confidence in explaining why things happened the way they did; using historical evidence of an increasingly wider range and difficulty, and beginning to challenge how useful this evidence is.
